Oscar Levis was one of the best Jamaican players ever. Only Justin Masterson has won more games in the majors by a Jamaican, through 2022; Levis was 38-35 in the big leagues. Levis was noted for his spitball and "fake spitter". His skin color and spitball both kept him out of the white major leagues as he spent his career in the Negro Leagues and the Cuban Winter League. He was involved in three notable games in Cuba - one of the best pitching duels in league history, a no-hitter and a contest in which a future Hall-of-Famer hit three inside-the-park homers. The first player born in Jamaica, this fact was not recorded for many years, due to mistaken information on his birthplace as well as the Negro Leagues being classified as major leagues decades after his passing. The Tigres del Licey (logo pictured) win their 11th Caribbean Series title, more than any other team. César Valdéz is named Caribbean Series MVP. Ramón Hernández, Luis Raven, Robert Pérez and José Antero Núñez are inducted into the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame. Jesse Barfield, Denis Boucher, Rich Harden and Joe Wiwchar are elected to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. The Leones del Caracas take their record 18th Venezuelan League title, but first in 13 years. The Cañeros de Los Mochis win their first Mexican Pacific League championship in 20 years.

February 24: Today's featured birthday is that of Mike Sember, who turns 70. 1917 - The Boston Red Sox sell former star pitcher Smokey Joe Wood to the Cleveland Indians, where he will play the outfield. 1943 - The Texas League announces it will cease operations for World War II. 1966 - University of Southern California star Tom Seaver signs a deal with the Atlanta Braves; the deal will later be voided. 1977 - Ron Fairly (pictured) is traded to the Toronto Blue Jays and will become the first player on both major league Canadian teams as a result. 2003 - Commissioner Bud Selig bans the use of ephedra after it was linked to the death of Steve Bechler.
